Some Facts About The Runner's High

If you're feeling a little blue or depressed, achieving what's called "the runner's high" can make you feel better and happier.

So what is the runner's high?

If you get some physical exercise, such as going out for a run or doing some aerobic exercising, certain chemicals in your brain (neurotransmitters) can be boosted, giving you a good feeling emotionally.

According to a psychiatrist who I used to see, the runner's high is subtle.  It won't make you feel super-high.  However, it will make you feel pretty good nonetheless.

This doctor told me that, for most people, doing aerobic exercises, jogging, running, or just going out for a walk around your neighborhood will give you the runner's high after about ten minutes or so.

You can also get the runner's high via heavy weight lifting.  However, you're more likely to get the high with aerobic exercise, running, walking, or jogging because by doing that you're body is moving around more than it does with weight lifting.

Also, while you're exercising, you're more likely to get the runner's high by combining the exercise with positive thinking.

So if you want to feel a little better, try to achieve the runner's high.  Hey, it often works for me.
